Just getting your thoughts. 45 large out the door is what they are asking for a TRD pro Tundra and I was just wondering aloud if you guys thought that was fair.
Seems like you get a lot for $45,000 but on the other hand; no its not a Ford Raptor, but those were going for between 50-56 grand in 2014 before they were discontinued so I wouldn’t expect as much.
Basically what you get a 4 door with the big engine, 4 wheel drive, the mid point in interior timings and some really good bolt on suspension with some better wheels and tires (and an overpriced catback exhaust).
The only standout is the suspension but its a pricey suspension that’s been well engineered and if you compare apples to apples (trim to trim) its cheaper to buy it off the lot than it is to build it (you can buy the suspension separate).
So I guess if you are in the market for a 4 door 4x4 short bed with the big engine and the mid level interior....why not?
I like it.

Unfortunately, the short box isn’t big enough to carry all of the crack pipe due to having a short box

it might crack pipe?

I still enjoy that Toyota’s racing arm had an acronym that's one vowel away from being TuRD.

Also TRaD....think about it.

So there’s only about 5k difference between the new Taco and the above Tundra? I’d totally opt for the Tundra.

The Tundra Limited tops out at 50k and the Tacoma Limited tops out at 40k. A TRD Pro Tacoma is probably in the $37,000 range (when it becomes available)

45k usd = 60K cad so yeah that’s way too much and I’ll give it a crack pipe. $35K usd max(~50k cad) would be right around the range I would expect something like this. It’s a really sweet truck tho and it’s a damn shame canada doesn’t get ANY TRD Pro anything at all. No Tundra,no 4runner, and no Tacoma.

Not the ones around here, none have ever been taken off road.

That’s unfortunate.

Double cab short bed TRD package is 46,000 CAD, so if they sold it there something like 48,000 is what I would expect. Not bad.

You don’t live in a place where no one offroads their expensive trucks.

I wanted to like the Tundra. I was all set to replace my Lightning at one point with the 2WD Reg. Cab 5.7L Short bed with the “SM” package meaning the mirrors and bumpers would be body-colored. They had a TRD supercharger that made north of 500-hp and still carried a warranty.
I drove one (without the blower) and walked away from it. They feel so much bigger and heavier than my previous trucks. Probably because they are.
effectively:

Well its not lightning, but if you got a short bed, single cab 2wd with the supercharger you would have one helluva fast truck on your hands. 500 hp and a 4.30 rear end? dayum.

The grille is the best part.

TruckTrend had one run 4.4 0-60, and a 13.0 at 106 with the same factory warranty. Compared to the Lightning, 5.4 and 14.1 at 99, it was a heck of an upgrade.
And the one I was debating could tow/haul more than the Lightning since the suspension wasn’t altered.

It really is pretty great. I’ve been tempted to find an 90-94 FJ80 grill for my truck, T O Y O T A so much better than the bean in a hat.

I wanted to get the TRD Pro grille for my brothers 2014 Tacoma as a birthday present but at 800 dollars I was like fuuuuuuck that.

That's still not huge gap. Both clearly capable rigs with different uses. What's the mpg on the Tundra?

They missed an opportunity to really put the screws to the Raptor here. Toyota used to sell an aftermarket supercharger for the Tundra which bumped it up to 500 HP. You could argue that this is not necessary, but necessity is not what buyers of a top-of-the-line trail truck outfitted with equipment most of them will never use are looking for. “On top of being slower, the Raptor doesn’t even give you a V8 anymore. But don’t worry; we at Toyota have your back!” would have been a far more effective pitch than just trying to slightly undercut the dominant competitor.

I can’t recall exactly what the issue was but I seem to remember there being a lot of money and red tape being involved with putting the supercharger on their from the factory, same story with changing the suspension components radically like the raptor. With the Supercharger it was CARB of CAFE or something and with the suspension it was crash certs. Toyota wimped financially, but then again the F150 program has MORE than enough cash to carry a risk like the Raptor in the event that it was a niche product instead of the success it became.

I must say I dig the look and have always been a fan of current gen Tundras regarding robustness, reliability etc. But for $45k I’m thinking I’d get the ‘platinum’ edition and maintain body colored bumpers while having cooled/heated leather seats. The grill and headlamps can be purchased from TRD afterwards and are cheap.
Then we get to power. I’ve driven 1 Land Cruiser (200 series, same engine) with the TRD Supercharger and must say, I would not drive a vehicle with this drivetrain in any other layout. Give me ze boost! It’d still come out cheaper than a comparable F150 3.5EB Lariat (granted the F150 is a brand new design).

Crack pipe to me. To be fair, I am having an extraordinary hard time adjusting my expectations to the new reality of truck prices. They all seem like crack pipe prices to me now.
